Q&A with British Hairdressing Award Finalist and Reflections Senior Director Kelly Small

Tell us about your career with Reflections

“I began my 30 year career with Reflections as an Apprentice based at our Fishponds branch and was soon promoted to a Colourist then Stylist. Through hard work and study at the Reflections Training Academy and through the opportunity to work in various salon branches, I gained a unique perspective on differing clientele and skills. I became a successful Stylist, I believe, through focusing on client care and consultation. It took me onto entering competitions, becoming an Educator and then onto senior management and Directorship. Being part of a large company means there are lots of opportunities for career progression but as we are family owned and ran, we still have that family-feel as part of one big Team.”

What have been your biggest career challenges?

“During my Apprenticeship I wasn’t always the quickest learner! By working that much harder and giving the salon and clients 100%, I still achieved my goals. I feel the apprenticeship stage is possibly the hardest few years but equally the most rewarding once you qualify as you have a trade and skills that you can use for life.”

What are your career highlights?

“Qualifying for my Master Colour Award with Wella was a great personal achievement for me as was entering multiple competitions like the British Hairdressing Awards (where I was a Finalist), Wella Trend Vision (Regional Finalist) and being asked to judge L’Oréal colour trophy.

My involvement with London Fashion Week, multiple catwalk shows and photographic shoots have all been not only highlights but so much fun. I now enjoy being an Educator and Consultant helping Managers and Stylists to achieve their own career goals.”

Who’s hair would you most like to style?

“Margo Robbie! She is stylish, beautiful and I feel she could wear either a sophisticated style or more fun, playful on trend look . Also maybe Brad Pit? I love longer looks for male clients allowing freedom with natural texture and casual finishing for a unkept look.”

What would you advise anyone going into hairdressing?

“See it through! The rewards out weigh the hard work. Mental health experts recommend doing things for others (which is the essence of our trade), being creative, being around like minded people, spending time in a positive environment - hairdressing has all this and more!!”
